Why did you choose to do an internship at GTCC, no other German Chambers of Commerce in Asia or companies?
Before answering this question, I should mention that I have never been to Asia before. The wish for living outside of Europe and experiencing something so different that I couldn’t even imagine how my life would be was the reason why I looked for internship opportunities in South-East Asia. In this regard, Thailand has been of special interest for me because of its widely known and rich culture, the friendliness of its people, the Thai food, and its breath taking landscapes. I knew that doing an internship in Bangkok is the perfect chance to truly get to know the Thai culture and to experience the country in a deeper way as tourists do. Because of my experience in the B2B sector and my interest in bilateral trade relations, I searched for opportunities on GTCC’s website. The job description for the Membership, Event and Communications internship really hooked me and I just felt that I want this job. Luckily, it worked out pretty well. 🙂
What was your expectation of having an internship with GTCC and what was your impression after spending 2 weeks with us?
When I started working for GTCC, I expected to gain an understanding of the Thai economy and the bilateral trade relations between Thailand and Germany. This expectation has been more than met, thanks to tasks like supporting the preparation of a panel discussion about Thailand 4.0 and updating the daily news on GTCC’s Website.
Of course, I also expected to learn more about the Thai work culture, which is so far vrey nice. My Thai colleagues like to make jokes, which create a very friendly work atmosphere. Furthermore, all GTCC team members are incredibly helpful and open to questions.
In addition, I expected to gain a deeper understanding about event organization and corporate communication. The first event I could join was the Gala Night 2017, which has been one of the highlights so far. By supporting its organization, I could gain a feeling of what it means to establish such a huge event.
Which part of the Membership, Event and Communication are you most interested in?
As an outgoing and open person who loves to communicate with other people, I am looking very forward to supporting the young professional team; i.e. to help organizing events and attend networking evenings. I also love to write, which is why I am excited to create social media posts as well as website content and to help with public relations activities. One objective that I would love to achieve is to write an article or conduct an interview for the quarterly UPDATE Magazine.
What do you plan to do after your internship?
I am looking forward to discovering more places of this precious region. Luckily, I will have some time to travel after finishing my internship. The truth is, the more stories you hear from other travelers and interns, the more places you actually want to explore. For sure, I won’t be able to visit every location I have in mind but I still think of every possible trip as a mind broadening experience.
Back in Germany, I will start writing my Master Thesis in order to complete my studies in Consumer Affairs at the Technical University of Munich. Nevertheless, finding a professor who is willing to supervise the thesis is going to be my challenge here. Fortunately, the economic development in Thailand is very interesting and I hope the work at GTCC inspires me to find a great topic.
